Ice Fishing

In addition to ice fishing at Granby Lake, there are numerous ice fishing contests each winter that take place on the frozen waters of the lakes and reservoirs of Grand County, boasting some of the largest lake trout in the state.Even though Grand Lake is Colorado’s largest natural lake and is popular for ice fishing, Lake Granby is where one can find the best ice fishing action. It is the second largest lake (reservoir) in Colorado, over 10 miles long and 42 miles of shoreline and a high pool of 8,280 feet, and is famously known for its Mackinaw Lake Trout fishing.

Other species you can expect to catch ice fishing in Lake Granby include Kokanee Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and Brook Trout. Every year, ice fishermen flock to Grand County to experience the annual Three Lakes Grand Fishing Contest, sponsored by local businesses and the Granby Area Chamber of Commerce.

Granby typically hosts three of these contests each year held on all three of the Lakes, Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Lake, and Lake Granby generally held for dates scheduled in February, March, and May.
